Dookie Dash is a skill-based online video game created by Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) non-fungible token (NFT) collection. The game is an “endless runner” in which a player navigates a vehicle through a sewer, attempting to survive as long as possible while collecting items and destroying obstacles to achieve a high score.1 The gameplay mechanics are similar to popular mobile games such as Temple Run and Subway Surfers.1
The game has been released in two distinct versions. The first, also named Dookie Dash, was an exclusive, token-gated event that ran from January to February 2023. Access was restricted to holders of a specific NFT called a “Sewer Pass”.1 This initial version pioneered the concept of a “skill-based mint,” where a player’s in-game performance directly determined the attributes and potential value of the NFT reward they received.4 The second version, a free-to-play sequel titled Dookie Dash: Unclogged, was developed in partnership with the game studio Faraway and launched globally in September 2024 for mobile and desktop platforms, opening the experience to a mass-market audience.6
Both iterations are set within a broader narrative arc called “The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey,” an expansion of the BAYC universe’s lore.1 The game’s central objective is to retrieve a mysterious key that was accidentally swallowed by a character named Jimmy the Monkey and subsequently lost in the BAYC sewers.2 The project integrates various elements of the Yuga Labs Web3 ecosystem, including the ApeCoin ($APE) cryptocurrency and the ApeChain blockchain.6 The original game generated significant economic activity and high levels of player engagement but also attracted controversy over its high financial barrier to entry and allegations of widespread cheating.10
Overview and Development
Origins and Announcement
Yuga Labs began teasing a new interactive experience for its community in November 2022, building anticipation for a project that would expand the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem beyond static digital art into the realm of gaming.2 The formal announcement for Dookie Dash came on January 12, 2023, positioning the game as a novel method to gamify the process of minting NFTs.1 The strategic intent was to create a more engaging and participatory event for its community, rewarding skill rather than relying on the random-chance mechanics common in many NFT mints.13
The game was developed in collaboration with the digital production agency Make Me Pulse.4 The development focused on creating a highly replayable and addictive core gameplay loop, described as a “dopamine shot” gaming mechanic. To further enhance its appeal, the game was given a nostalgic visual language reminiscent of the PlayStation 1 era, blending modern Web3 concepts with retro aesthetics.4
“The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey” Narrative
The premise of Dookie Dash is rooted in a narrative storyline titled “The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey.” This story was introduced to the community on December 22, 2022, through a short animated film that established the lore and the player’s objective.1
The plot begins at a party attended by various Bored Ape characters. A time-traveling ape, described as a “toilet knight,” emerges from a portal in a restroom to present a mysterious, otherworldly box and a single key to the group.2 During the ensuing celebration, a hapless character named Jimmy the Monkey accidentally swallows the key.2 In a state of panic, Jimmy rushes back to the restroom to try and expel it. His effort is so strenuous that it rips a hole in the space-time continuum, causing the key to be lost deep within the BAYC sewers.4 This event establishes the central mission for the game: players must “dash” through the sewers to find and retrieve the lost key.4
This narrative was not merely a decorative backstory but a foundational component of the project’s engagement and economic strategy. By framing the game within a multi-chapter saga, chronicled on a dedicated website, MDvMM.xyz, Yuga Labs transformed a standard NFT mint into a participatory, story-driven event.15 The clear objective, find the key, provided players with a compelling reason to engage beyond pure financial speculation. Furthermore, the promise that the story and the rewards would evolve over time created a long-term incentive for participants to hold onto the digital assets they earned, fostering a more invested community and discouraging immediate selling.2 The phased release of the narrative, from the initial teaser film to the game announcement, methodically built anticipation and allowed the market to react. This was evidenced by a notable surge in the trading volume and floor price of related NFT collections, such as the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), as collectors strategically acquired assets to gain an advantage in the tiered minting event.2 In this way, the lore functioned as a utility layer, giving the associated NFTs a purpose within an ongoing story, which in turn catalyzed significant economic activity and community engagement.
Dookie Dash (January–February 2023)
The inaugural version of Dookie Dash was a limited-time event that required a specific NFT for access. It was structured as a high-stakes competition where player skill directly translated into the value of the final reward.
The Sewer Pass: A Key to the Sewers
Access to the original Dookie Dash was exclusively granted to holders of a “Sewer Pass” NFT.1 These passes were available as a free claim for existing owners of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFTs. The claim period ran from January 17 to February 8, 2023, with holders responsible for paying the associated blockchain transaction (gas) fees.3 Individuals who did not own a BAYC or MAYC NFT could purchase a Sewer Pass from holders on secondary NFT marketplaces like OpenSea.12
The Sewer Passes were not uniform; they were issued in four distinct tiers that provided a percentage-based bonus to a player’s final score in the game. The tier of the pass was determined by the specific combination of Yuga Labs NFTs held in the wallet at the time of the claim.3 This system was designed to reward the most dedicated collectors within the ecosystem.
The tiers were structured as follows:
- Tier 1: Awarded to wallets holding only a MAYC NFT. This tier provided no score bonus (0%).
- Tier 2: Awarded to wallets holding a MAYC and a Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC) NFT. This tier provided a 10% score bonus.
- Tier 3: Awarded to wallets holding only a BAYC NFT. This tier provided a 20% score bonus.
- Tier 4: Awarded to wallets holding a BAYC and a BAKC NFT. This tier provided the highest bonus of 30%.
Gameplay and Scoring
The game presented players with a 3D endless runner experience. Players controlled an ape character on a vehicle, navigating through a procedurally generated sewer tunnel filled with obstacles.1 The objective was to travel as far as possible without colliding with a barrier, which would immediately end the run.1
A player’s score was calculated based on a combination of three main factors:
- Survival Time: The longer a player survived in the sewer, the more points they accumulated.1
- Fragments Collected: Players could collect items called “fragments” scattered throughout the course to increase their score.1
- Obstacles Destroyed: Certain obstacles could be destroyed by using a “dash” ability, which also added points to the total score.1
To enhance gameplay, players had the option to purchase a “Powershart Pack” for 2 ApeCoin ($APE).2 This pack provided a temporary 10-minute boost with in-game advantages, such as a 15% bonus added to the final run score or a reduction in the cooldown time for the dash ability.21 This feature served as the primary utility and economic sink for the $APE token within the game.
Competition and The Golden Key
The competitive window for Dookie Dash was open from January 19 to February 8, 2023.1 During this period, Sewer Pass holders could play an unlimited number of times to try and achieve the highest possible score, with only the top score for each pass being recorded on the official leaderboard.13
The ultimate prize was reserved for the player who achieved the single highest score across all validated Sewer Passes. This player would receive a unique, one-of-a-kind NFT known as the “Golden Key”.2 On February 16, 2023, Yuga Labs announced that professional esports player Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson was the winner, having achieved a score of 928,522.9 On February 28, Jackson sold the Golden Key NFT to entrepreneur and collector Adam Weitsman for 1,000 Wrapped Ether (WETH), a sum equivalent to approximately $1.63 million at the time of the transaction.1
Post-Competition Events
Following the conclusion of the main competition, Yuga Labs hosted two additional events to transition players to the next phase of the narrative.
Toad Mode
From February 22 to March 1, 2023, a special bonus round called “Toad Mode” was made available.1 The primary purpose of this mode was to offer a “second chance” to Sewer Pass holders who had failed to log a score greater than zero during the main event, thereby making their passes eligible for the subsequent reward phase.1 The gameplay in Toad Mode was similar to the original but introduced a new objective: collecting “Toad Points” by capturing different types of toads within the sewer. These points did not affect the original leaderboard but provided an alternative path to earning rewards.1
The Summoning
The culmination of the Dookie Dash event was “The Summoning,” which took place on March 15, 2023.3 During this event, holders of any validated Sewer Pass (one with a score greater than zero from either the main game or Toad Mode) could participate in a burn mechanic. This involved permanently destroying their Sewer Pass NFT in exchange for a new NFT called a “Power Source”.1 The rarity and specific traits of the received Power Source were directly determined by the player’s final rank on the
Dookie Dash leaderboard, cementing the link between in-game skill and the value of the on-chain asset.1 There were eight different types of Power Sources revealed, corresponding to different performance tiers.1
Dookie Dash: Unclogged (2024)
In 2024, Yuga Labs launched a sequel, Dookie Dash: Unclogged, representing a significant strategic shift from an exclusive, crypto-native event to a mainstream, free-to-play game.
Transition to Free-to-Play
Developed in partnership with Web3 game studio Faraway, Dookie Dash: Unclogged was designed to be accessible to a broad audience by removing the requirement to own an NFT.7 The game was released globally on September 19, 2024, for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac platforms following a brief delay and a soft launch in select regions.6
Yuga Labs executives stated that the rationale behind this pivot was to expand the reach of the Bored Ape Yacht Club intellectual property beyond the core Web3 community.7 The goal was to leverage the simple and intuitive gameplay as a “gateway” to onboard a new wave of users into the Yuga ecosystem, aiming to “get Yuga and Bored Ape Yacht Club into a million pockets”.7
Gameplay Evolution and New Features
While the core endless runner mechanic of navigating a sewer and dodging obstacles remains central to the experience, Unclogged introduced several new features and a more structured gameplay system.28 The game is divided into two primary modes to accommodate both casual and competitive players.30
- Arcade Mode: This is a casual, mission-based mode designed for progression and rewards. Players complete in-game tasks to earn “Stars,” which are used to advance through a 100-tier “Arcade Pass.” Progressing through the pass unlocks cosmetic items, in-game currency, and other content. A premium version, the “Star Pass,” is also available for purchase to access exclusive rewards.
- Championship Mode: This mode is the competitive heart of the game. Players compete on weekly and seasonal leaderboards to achieve the highest scores. Top performers in this mode are rewarded with “Golden Plungers,” the key asset needed to qualify for the end-of-season tournament.
Creator Mode and Player Economy
A major innovation in Dookie Dash: Unclogged is the introduction of “Creator Mode”.7 Powered by Faraway’s Creator Suite, this feature enables players to design and mint their own in-game assets as on-chain items.7 Users can upload 2D art or 3D models to create unique avatars, vehicles, and stickers that are playable within the game.28
These user-generated assets can be sold on the Faraway Shop, an integrated marketplace, providing a direct monetization path for creators.28 The assets are designed with interoperability in mind, with the potential to be used in thousands of other games and virtual experiences that support the standard, thereby creating a player-driven economy that extends beyond Dookie Dash itself.28
Prize Structure and Incentives
The competitive structure of Unclogged revolves around seasonal play, with each season lasting approximately three months (90 days).6 The primary reward for high-level competitive play is the “Golden Plunger,” an NFT minted on ApeChain, Yuga Labs’ dedicated blockchain.6
These Golden Plungers serve as tickets for entry into the end-of-season esports tournament, which features a prize pool of over $1 million.6 Qualification for the tournament is determined by a player’s rank on the seasonal leaderboard and the quantity of Golden Plungers they have accumulated throughout the season.32
Economic Impact and Web3 Integration
The launch of Dookie Dash created significant economic ripples throughout the Web3 ecosystem, demonstrating a novel model for integrating gameplay with digital asset value. The following table provides a comparative overview of the two game editions before a deeper analysis of their economic models.
Table 1: Comparison of Dookie Dash Editions

Market Performance of the Original Game
The initial, NFT-gated version of Dookie Dash had a profound and immediate impact on the NFT market. The Sewer Pass NFTs, required for entry, became highly sought-after and liquid assets. In the first 24 hours of trading on secondary markets, the collection generated 8,394 ETH in trading volume, equivalent to approximately $12.8 million.37 Within ten days of its debut, the total trading volume for Sewer Passes surpassed $40 million.10
The excitement surrounding the game also had a significant positive effect on the broader Yuga Labs ecosystem. In the 24-hour period following the game’s announcement, sales volume for Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs increased by 124%, while Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT sales rose by 171%.5 The floor price of Bored Ape Kennel Club NFTs, which provided a score bonus when paired with a BAYC or MAYC, reached a nine-month high of over 11 ETH.2
ApeCoin and ApeChain Utility
The Dookie Dash project was designed to integrate deeply with Yuga Labs’ native cryptocurrency and blockchain infrastructure.
- ApeCoin ($APE): In the 2023 version of the game, $APE served as the currency for purchasing “Powershart” power-ups. This created a direct utility for the token, and over the three-week competition, players collectively spent 424,566 $APE on these in-game boosts.2 The increased demand and attention also contributed to an 11% rise in the price of $APE during the game’s launch period.38 For
Dookie Dash: Unclogged, it has been speculated that the $1 million prize pool will be distributed in $APE, although Yuga Labs has not officially confirmed this.39 Additionally, the ApeCoin DAO, the decentralized governing body for the token, approved AIP-402, a proposal allocating $150,000 in $APE to fund user acquisition and marketing campaigns for the free-to-play sequel.41 - ApeChain: Dookie Dash: Unclogged utilizes ApeChain for its on-chain components.43 ApeChain is a Layer-3 blockchain built on the Arbitrum Orbit framework, designed specifically for the ApeCoin ecosystem to offer low transaction fees and high throughput.43 The “Golden Plungers” that players earn to qualify for tournaments are minted as NFTs on ApeChain, representing the game’s primary on-chain asset and integrating it directly into Yuga’s dedicated blockchain infrastructure.6
The economic model of the original Dookie Dash created a powerful, self-reinforcing system where various components of the Yuga ecosystem drove value to one another. This began with the established value of the core BAYC and MAYC NFTs, which granted their holders the exclusive right to claim a free Sewer Pass.5 The game itself then imbued these Sewer Passes with tangible utility, transforming them from a simple airdropped collectible into a key for a high-stakes competition.1 This utility, combined with the allure of a multi-million dollar prize, fueled immense demand for Sewer Passes on the secondary market, driving over $40 million in trading volume and simultaneously increasing the value of the core NFTs required for the initial claim.10 The desire to achieve a higher score further stimulated the economy by incentivizing players to spend $APE on in-game boosts, creating a direct demand for the ecosystem’s currency.9 This intense competition and high prize value gave rise to a completely new, tertiary economy of “boosting” services, where skilled gamers were paid thousands of dollars to play on behalf of NFT holders, a decentralized economic offshoot that emerged organically from the game’s design.1 Finally, the rewards themselves, the Power Sources, were designed to have future utility within the broader Otherside metaverse, closing the value loop and encouraging participants to remain invested in the ecosystem for the next narrative chapter.
Reception and Controversies
The launch of Dookie Dash was met with a mixture of intense enthusiasm and significant criticism, sparking widespread discussion about the nature of Web3 gaming.
Player Engagement and Statistics (Original Game)
The 2023 event saw remarkable levels of player engagement. Over 25,525 unique Sewer Pass holders participated in the game.4 Collectively, these players logged more than 7.5 million individual runs, which amounted to a total of 706,436 hours of playtime, the equivalent of approximately 80 years.4 The average player spent a notable 27.7 hours in the game over the three-week period.4 Yuga Labs also reported that this engagement translated into significant growth for its community, estimating that the BAYC ecosystem expanded by 40% during the event.4
Cheating and Exploits
The high stakes of the competition led to widespread attempts to cheat the system. A major point of controversy was the emergence of paid “booster” services.1 In this arrangement, Sewer Pass holders would hire highly skilled gamers to play on their accounts to achieve a top score, with some boosters charging fees as high as 2.5 ETH (approximately $4,200 at the time) for their services.11
The game was also subject to numerous technical exploits. Because it was a browser-based game, its code was vulnerable to manipulation. Some hackers claimed to have discovered a way to use a “course seed” to generate the exact layout of a game run in advance, allowing for the creation of bots that could execute a perfect, predictable playthrough.1 Other reported cheats included modifying the game’s code to make obstacles transparent or remove them entirely, giving the player an unfair advantage.47
Yuga Labs’ Response to Cheating
Yuga Labs publicly acknowledged the cheating allegations and stated that it would not be tolerated.48 The company explained that it was collecting metadata from every game run to analyze for foul play. Following the conclusion of the competition, Yuga Labs conducted a review process to validate the leaderboard, ultimately removing scores that were found to be associated with cheating.1
Despite these efforts, some members of the community remained skeptical about the company’s ability to detect all forms of cheating, especially the more sophisticated exploits.1 Concerns were also raised that the automated cheat-detection systems might generate false positives, unfairly penalizing legitimate players who experienced technical issues like poor internet connectivity or hardware lag.11
Critical Reception
The game received a polarized reception. It was praised by many within the Web3 community for its addictive and engaging gameplay, and for creating a successful event that energized the BAYC ecosystem and spurred significant economic activity.4 The fact that the winner was a professional esports player was cited by some as proof that the game was genuinely skill-based and not purely determined by chance or wealth.2
However, the original game also faced substantial criticism. A primary complaint was its extremely high barrier to entry. With Sewer Passes trading for thousands of dollars on the secondary market, participation was prohibitively expensive for the average gamer.46 This led to accusations that the game was a “pay-to-win” system accessible only to a wealthy few. More broadly, some critics dismissed the project as a “cash grab” and a simplistic game whose primary purpose was to fuel NFT speculation rather than to provide intrinsic entertainment value.37
Connection to the Otherside Metaverse
Dookie Dash and its associated narrative are not standalone projects but are explicitly designed as integral components of Yuga Labs’ long-term vision for Otherside, its ambitious gamified metaverse.12 The game serves as both a narrative and a mechanical bridge to this larger virtual world.
The “Power Source” NFTs that players received from “The Summoning” are intended to be foundational assets within Otherside.1 Yuga Labs has hinted that these Power Sources will be used in future experiences to create “mechs” for a “cosmic war,” a concept that links
Dookie Dash to other Yuga collections like HV-MTL and to artifacts found on Otherdeed land plots.25
The transition to the free-to-play Dookie Dash: Unclogged model is widely seen as a strategic move to build a large user base that can eventually be onboarded into the full Otherside metaverse upon its launch.7 By introducing millions of players to the lore, characters, and gameplay mechanics of the BAYC universe through an accessible mobile and PC game, Yuga Labs is creating a funnel for its flagship metaverse project.
Otherside is envisioned as a “metaRPG,” a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that blends traditional gaming mechanics with the principles of Web3 ownership.51 The project aims to support over 10,000 players interacting simultaneously in a single, persistent environment, powered by technology from the company Improbable.51 A key feature of this vision is interoperability, allowing players to import their existing NFTs, such as Bored Apes, CryptoPunks, and Meebits, as playable characters in the virtual world.51 The events of
Dookie Dash represent the first major interactive step for the community in the co-creation of this expansive digital universe.51
