What are Otherdeeds?

Otherdeeds are a collection of dynamic non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that represent ownership of virtual land plots in Otherside, a gamified metaverse project developed by Yuga Labs.12 Launched as a major expansion of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) ecosystem, each Otherdeed is a unique digital asset on the Ethereum blockchain, possessing a distinct combination of attributes such as environment, sediment, and resources. Some rare plots also contain powerful artifacts or are inhabited by enigmatic celestial beings known as Kodas.23

The project’s vision is to create a “metaRPG,” a metaverse role-playing game that blends the mechanics of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) with the Web3 principles of player ownership and interoperability.14 The total supply of Otherdeeds is capped at 200,000, with the first 100,000 being released through a highly anticipated and record-breaking sale on April 30, 2022.12

Otherdeeds represent a fundamental strategic shift for Yuga Labs, serving as the foundational infrastructure to provide tangible, long-term utility to its entire portfolio of NFT collections. While projects like the Bored Ape Yacht Club established their value through cultural capital and community access, Otherdeeds were conceived as the bridge to transform these static, collectible profile pictures (PFPs) into active, usable assets within an interactive virtual world.25 By owning a plot of land, holders of BAYC, Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), and other compatible NFTs can see their assets come to life as playable 3D characters, positioning Otherdeeds as the critical real estate upon which all future gameplay, social experiences, and digital economies within the Yuga Labs universe will be built.16

Background and Conception

The development of Otherside is led by Yuga Labs, the creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, in a strategic partnership with two key players in the digital entertainment and Web3 space: Improbable, a British metaverse technology company, and Animoca Brands, a prominent investor and developer in the blockchain gaming sector.2 The stated mission for the project is to create an immersive, interactive, and collaborative virtual world that transcends the limitations of previous metaverse platforms.1 The core design philosophy aims to merge the engaging, large-scale social dynamics of traditional MMORPGs like

World of Warcraft with the decentralized, player-centric ownership models enabled by blockchain technology.24

Technological Foundation

A cornerstone of the Otherside project is its use of Improbable’s M² (MSquared) technology.2 This technological partnership was a critical early decision that defined the project’s entire technical trajectory and competitive positioning. Existing blockchain-based metaverses, such as The Sandbox and Decentraland, have often faced technical limitations regarding player concurrency, with servers or land parcels supporting only a small number of simultaneous users, which can lead to a fragmented and sparsely populated user experience.2 Yuga Labs’ vision for a “metaRPG” where “thousands can play together in real time” required a more robust and scalable solution to avoid this “empty world” problem.1

Improbable’s M² technology was specifically designed to address these challenges, promising to support over 10,000 players interacting simultaneously in a single, seamless virtual space.1 This platform is engineered to handle an immense computational load, processing more than half a billion operations per second to enable complex, large-scale interactions.14 Key features supported by this technology include:

  • Massive Concurrency: Allowing unprecedented numbers of players to gather and interact in one location, crucial for large-scale events, battles, and social gatherings.1
  • Natural Voice Chat: Enabling spatial, proximity-based voice communication for thousands of users at once, making it easier to have natural conversations even in large crowds.14
  • Advanced Physics and AI: Supporting millions of complex, interactive entities within the world, governed by physics and artificial intelligence, to create a richer and more dynamic gameplay environment.1

Interoperability and Co-Creation

A central tenet of the Otherside vision is interoperability, positioning it as an open metaverse hub rather than a closed, proprietary ecosystem.4 The platform is being built to allow players to import and use NFTs from a wide range of popular collections as their playable 3D avatars.6 At launch, Yuga Labs confirmed that 3D models would be provided for all of its own collections, including Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Bored Ape Kennel Club, CryptoPunks, and Meebits.1 Furthermore, the project has explicitly named other prominent third-party NFT collections that will be supported, such as Cool Cats, World of Women, Nouns, and CrypToadz, signaling an intent to foster a diverse and interconnected metaverse community.1

The development process itself is framed as a collaborative effort with the community, inspired by the emergent, player-driven narratives of tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons.1 Otherdeed holders, referred to as “Voyagers,” are not merely passive landowners but are invited to actively participate in shaping the final game through access to exclusive prototype builds, technical demos, and feedback sessions.17 This approach aims to create an “always-evolving experience co-created with its players,” embedding the community directly into the world’s development lifecycle.1

The Otherdeed Mint: A Record-Breaking Launch

The initial public sale of Otherdeeds took place on April 30, 2022, and stands as one of the most significant and tumultuous events in the history of non-fungible tokens.48 The launch involved the sale of 55,000 Otherdeed NFTs to the public, in addition to 45,000 parcels that were reserved for existing Yuga Labs community members and partners. Of these, 10,000 were claimable by BAYC holders, 20,000 by MAYC holders, and 15,000 were allocated to Yuga Labs and other developers contributing to the project.49

Sale Mechanics and Pricing

Each of the 55,000 Otherdeeds was sold for a fixed price of 305 ApeCoin (APE), the native token of the Yuga Labs ecosystem.810 Driven by immense anticipation for the sale, the price of APE had surged to an all-time high of over $26 in the days prior, making the cost of a single Otherdeed equivalent to approximately $5,800 to $6,900 at the time of the mint.101112

Yuga Labs had initially considered a Dutch auction format, where the price starts high and descends until all items are sold, as a mechanism to manage the expected high demand and mitigate network congestion.11 However, the company controversially abandoned this plan, publicly stating that “Dutch auctions are bullshit” and opting for the flat-price model.1113 To further control the sale, participation was restricted to wallets that had completed a Know Your Customer (KYC) verification process in advance, and an initial limit of two mints per wallet was enforced in an attempt to ensure a wider distribution.1011

The Ethereum “Gas War”

Despite these preventative measures, the sale’s launch at 9 p.m. ET triggered a “gas war” of unprecedented scale on the Ethereum network.1114 The overwhelming demand from thousands of users attempting to purchase Otherdeeds simultaneously created extreme network congestion. In a frantic effort to have their transactions prioritized by miners, participants began bidding up transaction fees, known as “gas,” to astronomical levels.15

The financial consequences were staggering. In the span of a few hours, users spent over $177 million on gas fees alone.14 Individual transaction fees frequently soared to between $3,500 and $5,500, and in some cases exceeded $13,000, more than double the cost of the NFT itself.1114 The intense network load also resulted in a high rate of failed transactions; users who paid thousands in gas fees often received nothing in return, though Yuga Labs later committed to refunding the fees for these failed attempts.1115 The event effectively rendered the Ethereum blockchain unusable for any other purpose for several hours, with even the blockchain explorer Etherscan reportedly crashing under the strain.1314

Despite the chaos, the 55,000 Otherdeeds sold out within hours, generating approximately $320 million in revenue for Yuga Labs and marking the largest NFT mint in history at that time.816 All ApeCoin raised from the sale was locked for a one-year period.814

The catastrophic gas war, however, served as more than just a logistical failure. It was a stark and public demonstration that Yuga Labs’ ambitions for a massive, high-transaction metaverse had fundamentally outgrown the capacity of the Ethereum mainnet. The event provided undeniable proof that a fully persistent Otherside, with millions of potential daily interactions for crafting, trading, and gameplay, would be economically and technically unviable on a Layer 1 blockchain prone to such congestion. This realization was the primary catalyst that made the development of a dedicated, scalable blockchain solution an existential necessity. The public acknowledgment by Yuga Labs that the mint had “turned off the lights on Ethereum” directly foreshadowed the strategic pivot toward building ApeChain, a custom infrastructure solution designed to prevent such an event from ever happening again.1317

Anatomy of an Otherdeed: Traits and Characteristics

A core innovation of the Otherdeed collection is that each NFT is “dynamic,” meaning its underlying metadata and composition can change and evolve over time based on the owner’s actions within the Otherside metaverse.26 This is a departure from the static nature of most PFP NFTs and is designed to make each plot of land a persistent, interactive part of the game world. The value, rarity, and in-game potential of an Otherdeed are determined by a combination of five primary trait categories.18

Primary Traits

  • Environment: This trait defines the visual biome and landscape of the land plot. There are 29 distinct environment types, each with its own aesthetic and rarity. The most common environment is “Swamp,” accounting for 7% of the initial supply, while the rarest is “Chaos,” found on only 0.11% of plots. Other environments include Glacier, Molten, Thornwood, Crystal, and Sky.18
  • Sediment: This trait functions as a tier system for the land, indicating both its composition and its geographical location relative to the center of the Otherside map. There are five sediment tiers, with the rarest and most central being “Biogenic Swamp” (10,000 plots). The tiers descend in rarity and move outward from the center, through “Chemical Goo” (20,000), “Rainbow Atmos” (22,000), “Cosmic Dream” (23,000), and finally to the most common and peripheral tier, “Infinite Expanse” (25,000).2418
  • Resources: Many Otherdeeds contain up to four types of replenishable resources, which are expected to be fundamental components of the in-game economy for activities like crafting and building. There are four main categories of resources: Anima (used for research), Ore (metal), Shard (stone), and Root (wood).24 These are further broken down into 74 specific resource types (e.g., “Psychosilk,” “Bonestone,” “Lumileaf”), each with its own rarity, which can significantly impact a plot’s value.1618
  • Artifact: These are rare and unique items that can be found on a plot of land. Only 21% of Otherdeeds contain an artifact.18 There are 74 different types of artifacts, ranging from common items like an “Ancient Coin” (1% chance) to legendary, 1-of-1 items that are unique in the entire collection.18 Some of the rarest artifacts, such as “Pandora’s Box,” “Mirror Mirror,” and “Sword of Chosen,” have commanded enormous premiums on secondary markets due to their perceived future in-game importance.1618
  • Koda: Kodas are mysterious, alien-like creatures that are a central part of Otherside’s lore. They are described as the beings who “have ushered us into the Otherside” and are found on only 10,000 of the first 100,000 Otherdeeds, making them a highly sought-after trait.24 Kodas themselves have a set of unique traits, including Eyes, Head, Core, Clothing, and Weapon.18 An even rarer subset of 99 Kodas are designated as “Mega Kodas,” which feature sophisticated designs and are among the most valuable assets in the ecosystem.18

The Voyager’s Journey: Exploring the Otherside

The “Voyager’s Journey” serves as the narrative and developmental framework for the phased rollout of the Otherside metaverse. It is structured as an 11-part storyline centered around a “mysterious Obelisk” that has appeared in the world.1920 This journey allows Otherdeed holders, known as “Voyagers,” to participate in a series of large-scale, interactive tech demos and playtests that actively contribute to the game’s development.1921

The First Trip

The inaugural event, titled the “First Trip,” took place on July 16, 2022. It was a massive technical demonstration that saw approximately 4,500 concurrent users log in to experience Otherside for the first time.619 The event began with players materializing as “Voyager” avatars in a blank lobby before following a giant Bored Ape through a portal into the “Biogenic Swamp,” the central region of the metaverse.19

Once inside, participants were guided to a large stadium where they could test basic avatar controls, including running, jumping, dancing, and using emotes.19 The experience then opened up, allowing Voyagers to explore the environment, use jump pads, and interact with giant creatures.20 The event culminated in a collaborative group boss fight against a large, hostile Koda.2022 The First Trip was widely regarded as a success, demonstrating the M² technology’s capability to handle thousands of players in a single, dynamic instance without significant performance issues. As a reward for their participation, the metadata of each Voyager’s Otherdeed was updated to include a piece of the Obelisk, permanently marking their role as early pioneers of the world.20

The Second Trip

Building on the success of the first event, the “Second Trip” was held on March 25, 2023, and represented a significant step forward in both scale and gameplay complexity.2123 The event hosted over 7,200 concurrent participants, and for the first time, Otherdeed holders were given guest passes to invite a friend, broadening the pool of players.623

The Second Trip introduced structured, team-based competition. Players were divided into four teams, each led by a prominent community influencer: Jimmy Wong, Brycent, Lowbellie, and Champ Medici.21 The primary objective was a competitive mini-game where teams collected “magic blobs” to feed a giant toad, with points awarded for their contributions.23 Team Glacial, led by Jimmy Wong, emerged as the winner, and each member of the team was airdropped an exclusive “Winged Helmet” cosmetic NFT as a prize.2124 The event also expanded the world’s lore by taking players on a guided tour of a new “Bone” environment, which was dramatically interrupted by an attack from a massive “BoneLand Dragon,” ending the trip on a cliffhanger.21

Ongoing Development and Future Roadmap

The Voyager’s Journey continues with an evolving roadmap focused on empowering creators and expanding gameplay. A key component of this is the Otherside Development Kit (ODK), a suite of tools that will allow developers and players to build their own characters, items, structures, and even full-fledged games within the metaverse.1725 In mid-2025, Yuga Labs announced a major update to the ODK, integrating an AI assistant named “Koda Agent.” This tool enables world creation through simple text-based commands (e.g., “make the sky blue”), dramatically lowering the technical barrier for user-generated content.2627

Alongside the ODK, Yuga Labs unveiled a series of new in-game experiences scheduled for mid-2025 to further test the platform and engage the community 2728:

  • Bathroom Blitz: An 8v8 team-based shooter set in the iconic Bored Ape bathroom.
  • Meet Me at the Clubhouse: A social hub with an increased capacity of 500 players.
  • Otherside Outbreak: A large-scale, long-term event designed as a major stress test for the platform’s infrastructure.

These activities are integrated with a new Voyager XP system, which tracks and rewards player participation across the ecosystem.26 Looking further ahead, the official roadmap includes the launch of “Voyager 2.0” and the activation of full utility for Otherdeeds by the end of 2025. This will be followed in 2026 by the introduction of a “Resources” system, which is expected to enable land-based resource production, crafting, and a more complex, player-driven economy.262728

Ecosystem and Technology

The Otherside metaverse and the Otherdeed collection are built upon a vertically integrated ecosystem of technology and finance designed to support a large-scale, decentralized digital economy. This ecosystem is powered by two core components: ApeCoin (APE) as its native currency and governance mechanism, and ApeChain as its dedicated blockchain infrastructure.

The Role of ApeCoin (APE)

ApeCoin (APE) is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain that serves as the official utility and governance token for the entire Yuga Labs ecosystem, including Otherside.529 Its functions are multifaceted:

  • Utility Token: APE is the primary medium of exchange within Otherside. It was the exclusive currency used for the initial Otherdeed mint and is intended for all future in-game transactions, such as purchasing digital assets, crafting items, and accessing exclusive experiences.13031
  • Governance: APE grants holders membership in the ApeCoin DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization. Through the DAO, APE holders can propose and vote on governance decisions that affect the ecosystem’s future, including the allocation of treasury funds, the establishment of rules, and the approval of new partnerships.232 The
Ape Foundation acts as the legal steward of the DAO, tasked with administering its decisions and ensuring the community’s vision is implemented.3031

ApeChain: A Dedicated Blockchain

The decision to develop a dedicated blockchain was a direct consequence of the challenges observed during the Otherdeed mint. By controlling the currency (ApeCoin), the application layer (Otherside), and now the infrastructure layer (ApeChain), Yuga Labs is constructing a powerful economic and technical moat around its ecosystem. This strategy of vertical integration reduces its dependency on the performance and fee structure of public blockchains like Ethereum, allows for the optimization of the user experience for its specific needs (i.e., gaming), and ensures that the economic value generated within Otherside is captured and circulated within its own closed-loop system.

Launched with the help of Yuga in 2024, ApeChain is a purpose-built blockchain designed to serve as the foundational infrastructure for the entire “Yugaverse”.17 Its creation was motivated by the need for a highly scalable, low-cost environment capable of supporting the millions of transactions expected from a fully operational Otherside metaverse.1315

The technical architecture of ApeChain is a Layer 3 (L3) blockchain built using Arbitrum’s Orbit framework.33 This advanced “rollup” solution operates on top of the Arbitrum One Layer 2 network, which in turn bundles transactions and settles them securely on the Ethereum Layer 1 mainnet. This layered approach is designed to offer the best of both worlds: the robust security and decentralization of Ethereum, combined with the high throughput and low transaction costs of a dedicated application chain.33 Key features of ApeChain include:

  • High Performance: The chain is optimized for gaming applications, featuring ultra-fast 0.25-second block times and the capacity to handle a massive volume of transactions without congestion.33
  • Low Gas Fees: By using APE as its native gas token, ApeChain can offer significantly lower transaction fees compared to Ethereum, making in-game actions like crafting and trading economically feasible for all players.33
  • Native APE Integration: All transaction fees on ApeChain are paid in APE, deeply embedding the token into the ecosystem’s core functions. This design also allows for deflationary tokenomics, as a portion of the fees collected can be programmatically burned, potentially reducing the total supply of APE over time.33

Market Performance and Historical Data

The launch of the Otherdeed for Otherside collection was a landmark event in the NFT market, setting records for both revenue and secondary market trading volume. The market’s valuation of these digital land plots has been closely tied to the broader crypto market trends, as well as community confidence in Yuga Labs’ ability to deliver on its ambitious roadmap for the Otherside metaverse.

Initial Sale and Trading Volume

The initial mint on April 30, 2022, raised approximately $320 million worth of ApeCoin, making it the largest NFT sale in history at the time.8 The secondary market exploded immediately after the launch. Within days, the total sales volume for Otherdeeds on marketplaces like OpenSea and X2Y2 had surpassed $833 million, and it crossed the $1 billion threshold shortly thereafter.91819 This frenetic activity established Otherdeeds as one of the most traded and valuable NFT collections in the world.34

Floor Price History

The floor price, the lowest price for any NFT in the collection, has served as a key barometer of market sentiment.

  • The mint price was 305 APE, which was equivalent to roughly 2.1 ETH or ~$6,000 on the day of the sale.18
  • The floor price reached its all-time high of 5.0 ETH on May 2, 2022, just two days after the mint, as demand peaked on secondary markets.3
  • Following the initial hype, the price experienced a correction in line with the broader 2022 crypto bear market. The average sale price, which was 9.3 ETH in May 2022, had decreased to 5.1 ETH by August 2022.18
  • As of late 2025, the floor price for an Otherdeed has stabilized at a much lower level, trading at approximately 0.13 ETH.3536

Notable High-Value Sales

While the floor price represents the entry point for the collection, the highest value has been concentrated in plots with extremely rare traits. The market has consistently placed a massive premium on Otherdeeds possessing 1-of-1 artifacts, rare Kodas, or desirable resource combinations. This indicates that collectors are speculating not just on digital scarcity, but on the significant in-game utility and economic advantages these traits are expected to provide once the Otherside economy is fully realized. The value of these rare plots is a direct bet on the successful execution of the project’s roadmap, making the high-tier sales a reflection of the discounted present value of their anticipated future utility.

Notable sales include:

  • In May 2022, Otherdeed #59906 sold for 625 ETH (approximately $1.5 million). Its immense value was attributed to its high rarity ranking and the presence of a 1-of-1 “mystery potion” artifact that had been featured in the official Otherside trailer.9
  • Throughout 2023, the top ten most expensive metaverse land sales across the entire NFT market all belonged to the Otherdeed or Otherdeed Expanded collections. These sales ranged from $276,500 to $514,350 for a single NFT.16 The most expensive sale of the year was
Otherdeed Expanded #5227, which sold for $514,350 due to its 1-of-1 “Pandora’s box” artifact.16

Collection Statistics

The Otherside ecosystem comprises two main collections:

  • Otherdeed for Otherside: The original collection of 100,000 NFTs released in April 2022.18 As of late 2025, data from marketplaces shows approximately 14,314 unique owners holding the 47,221 assets that are actively tracked.3
  • Otherdeed Expanded: A subsequent collection launched in April 2023 to further expand the metaverse. This collection added over 66,900 new items to the ecosystem and is held by over 12,300 unique owners.37
