M3 “Mega Mutant” Serum: This is the rarest and most coveted tier, with an exceptionally limited supply of only 8 vials ever created and airdropped.¹ This extreme scarcity immediately established the M3 serum as the “holy grail” of the BAYC ecosystem, with its value soaring into the millions of dollars on secondary markets.²

The Mutation Process

The process of creating a Mutant Ape from a Bored Ape is executed via a smart contract and follows a specific set of rules:

Ownership Requirement: To initiate a mutation, a user must hold both a Bored Ape NFT and a Mutant Serum NFT (M1, M2, or M3) in the same Ethereum wallet.¹⁰
Smart Contract Interaction: The holder interacts with a dedicated function on the official Bored Ape Yacht Club website to “expose” their Bored Ape to the serum.²
Serum Consumption: This action triggers a blockchain transaction that “burns” the serum NFT, permanently destroying it and removing it from circulation.²

Preservation of the Original: A critical feature of the process is that the original Bored Ape NFT is not altered, harmed, or destroyed.² The holder is left with two distinct and independently tradable NFTs: their original BAYC and the newly created MAYC. It transformed what could have been a difficult “either/or” decision into a “both/and” opportunity, encouraging a high rate of mutation and populating the new collection.
Multiple Mutations: A single Bored Ape can be exposed to one of each serum type (M1, M2, and M3) once. This means one BAYC could potentially create up to three different Mutant Apes, each a separate NFT.¹ An Ape cannot, however, ingest a serum of a given type more than once (e.g., an Ape that has used an M1 serum cannot use another M1 serum).⁶
