What is ApeFest?

ApeFest is the annual, exclusive, in-person gathering for owners of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) non-fungible token (NFT) collections.1 Organized by Yuga Labs, the creator of the BAYC ecosystem, the event is a primary vehicle for community engagement and brand building, designed to bridge the gap between digital ownership and tangible, real-world experiences.2 The festival has evolved significantly since its inception, transforming from a music-focused party held alongside the NFT.NYC conference into a standalone, international, multi-day convention that features major product launches, high-profile brand partnerships, and a vibrant ecosystem of community-organized side events.2

ApeFest serves as a cultural touchstone within the Web3 community, functioning as both a highly anticipated celebration for its members and a subject of wider public interest and controversy.2 The event is a critical component of the value proposition for high-value profile picture (PFP) NFTs. By providing exclusive access to high-production-value events with A-list performers, ApeFest transforms a static digital asset into a “membership card” for an exclusive club with real-world benefits.1 This function helps to justify the asset’s price floor and foster long-term holder loyalty, reinforcing Yuga Labs’ strategic goal of becoming a “Web3 lifestyle company”.13

History and Evolution

The inaugural ApeFest was held on October 31, 2021, coinciding with the broader NFT.NYC conference in New York City. It marked the first large-scale in-real-life (IRL) gathering for the rapidly growing BAYC community, which had formed just months earlier.14

Since its debut, the event has undergone a strategic evolution in both location and format. The first two festivals took place in New York City, leveraging the energy of the city’s major NFT conference.13 However, beginning in 2023, ApeFest detached from NFT.NYC and began a global tour, with events in Hong Kong (2023) and Lisbon (2024).6 This international expansion reflects Yuga Labs’ ambition to cultivate a global brand and directly engage its significant international holder base, which includes a substantial community in Asia.20

The format has also matured from a “three-evening concert” into a “multi-day convention” model, with organizers drawing inspiration from established fan conventions like BlizzCon.2 This expanded scope now includes interactive gaming demos for Yuga Labs projects like

Legends of the Mara and Dookie Dash, organized city exploration activities, and major ecosystem announcements, broadening its appeal beyond music and parties.4

ApeFest by Year

2021: New York City

The first ApeFest took place from October 31 to November 4, 2021, during the week of NFT.NYC, establishing itself as the highlight event of the conference.14 The week-long series of events marked the community’s transition from a purely online phenomenon into a tangible subculture.22

Activities were spread across multiple venues and included an exclusive yacht party to kick off the festival, an immersive gallery show at Bright Moments Gallery that drew around 700 attendees, a limited-edition merchandise pop-up shop, and a costume contest.2 The celebration culminated in a large-scale warehouse party at Brooklyn Steel.22 The final party featured a surprise lineup of high-profile performers, including sets from The Strokes, Beck, Lil Baby, and Questlove, along with stand-up comedy from Chris Rock and Aziz Ansari.13

A key partnership highlighted during the event was with Rolling Stone, which released limited-edition zines featuring Bored Apes.13 Shortly after the festival, in December 2021, Adidas announced its official entry into the metaverse through a partnership with BAYC, signaling the growing influence of the brand in mainstream culture.32

2022: New York City

Building on the success of the first event, ApeFest 2022 was a more ambitious, four-day music festival held from June 20-23 at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in the South Street Seaport area.1 The production was elaborate, featuring large-scale installations such as a 65-foot inflatable ape, sails flown on a historic ship docked at the pier, and a 35,000-square-foot immersive retail experience designed to look like gritty NYC streets leading to a museum-style presentation.1 The venue’s VIP bar was transformed into a 1970s-themed dive bar to extend the BAYC aesthetic throughout the space.1

The high-profile nature of the event necessitated a significant security operation. Organizers implemented measures including weapons detection and intelligence monitoring to mitigate credible reputational risks, including threats from known antagonists and a planned flash mob by a rival NFT company, which was successfully dispersed.35

The musical lineup was a major draw, with performances scheduled over four consecutive nights 23:

  • June 20: Questlove and LCD Soundsystem
  • June 21: HAIM, Lil Baby, and Timbaland
  • June 22: The Roots, Future, Rebelution, and Steel Pulse
  • June 23: Eminem & Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne

During their performance, Eminem and Snoop Dogg premiered a new music video featuring their personal BAYC avatars, a major cultural moment for the community.24 The event was sponsored by the Web3 platform Polygon, and ticketing was managed via the TokenProof app.25 An official collaboration with

Rolling Stone continued with a live OpenSea auction for a one-of-a-kind “Mutant Motorcycle Curtis” NFT.25

2023: Hong Kong

The third ApeFest, held from November 3-5, 2023, marked the festival’s first international edition.4 The move to Hong Kong was a strategic decision to engage the brand’s large Asian holder base and align with the city’s ambition to become a global Web3 hub.19 The event was also positioned to “rebuild trust and excitement” within the community during a broader downturn in the NFT market.17

The format shifted from a single-venue music festival to a city-wide convention experience. A central “Homebase” was established at the PMQ creative hub for wristband pickup, merchandise sales, and community networking.4 The main party took place at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal and featured performances by musical guests MC Jin and DJ Soda.4 The schedule was designed to encourage city exploration, with token-gated happy hours at local venues and an official “ApeFest zine” offering recommendations.4

Partnerships were a central focus of the Hong Kong event. Key activations included an exclusive merchandise drop with streetwear brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE), an interactive experience with BMW where holders could see their NFTs projected onto cars, and an Otherside metaverse demo.19 The most significant news was the announcement of a new Yuga Labs-endorsed NFT marketplace to be built with Magic Eden, a major development for the ecosystem that was revealed on stage by co-founder Greg Solano (“Gargamel”).19

The event was later overshadowed by a health and safety incident involving eye injuries, which is detailed in the “Criticism and Controversies” section below.

2024: Lisbon

The fourth ApeFest was held in Lisbon, Portugal, continuing the festival’s global tour and highlighting the city’s growing status as a European crypto and cultural hub.18 The event drew over 3,000 BAYC and MAYC holders.27

The main event venue was the LX Factory, a creative complex in Lisbon.27 The multi-day experience included a “Made By Apes Bodega” showcasing community-created products, numerous side events, and a series of competitive “Ape Games”.27 Headline musical performances were delivered by French Montana and Anderson.Paak.27

The most significant development at ApeFest 2024 was the mainnet launch of ApeChain, a dedicated Layer-2 blockchain built to support the ApeCoin ecosystem.28 This launch, conducted in partnership with Arbitrum, Horizen Labs, and Caldera, marked a major step in building out the technical infrastructure for the BAYC universe and signaled ApeFest’s maturation into a platform for major technology announcements.28 Brand partnerships continued to be a key feature, with activations from BMW, Michelin, and A Bathing Ape.37 BMW used the event to debut its new 2 Series Gran Coupé and showcase an in-car version of the Yuga Labs game

Dookey Dash: Unclogged.40

2025: Las Vegas (Upcoming)

The fifth edition of ApeFest is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a shift from previous multi-day formats, the main event will be a single-night experience on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the immersive entertainment venue AREA15.29

A major new element for 2025 is a collaboration with ComplexCon, a large-scale festival celebrating pop culture, music, art, and fashion.30 As part of the partnership, ApeFest ticket holders will receive exclusive access to ComplexCon, which takes place on October 25-26 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The first 1,250 attendees to claim ApeFest tickets will receive complimentary passes to ComplexCon, sponsored by ApeChain.29

Ticketing will be managed through the Tokenproof app, with entry remaining free for BAYC and MAYC holders who place a $169 refundable deposit. Tickets for a single guest (+1) are available for a non-refundable price of $269.29 A full weekend of community-hosted side events is planned around the main festival, with an official schedule managed on the Luma platform.30

Core Components of ApeFest

Exclusivity and Access

ApeFest is a token-gated event, meaning access is strictly limited to individuals who can cryptographically prove ownership of a BAYC or MAYC NFT.1 This principle of exclusivity is central to the event’s appeal and Yuga Labs’ brand strategy. The verification process is managed through the Tokenproof mobile application, which connects to a user’s crypto wallet to confirm token ownership without compromising the security of their private keys.25 To maintain validity, the qualifying NFT must remain in the holder’s enrolled wallet at the time of entry.1 The ticketing model typically includes a free ticket for the NFT holder, secured by a refundable deposit to mitigate no-shows, and a paid, non-refundable ticket for a single guest.29

Entertainment and Performances

A primary attraction of ApeFest is its high-caliber entertainment lineup. The festival has consistently featured A-list musical acts spanning multiple genres, including rock bands like The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem; hip-hop legends such as Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Future, and Lil Wayne; and pop groups like HAIM.1 The events have also included performances by renowned DJs like Questlove and Timbaland and special appearances by world-famous comedians, including Chris Rock and Aziz Ansari.1

Brand Partnerships and Activations

ApeFest serves as a key platform for Yuga Labs to unveil and showcase high-profile collaborations with major global brands. These partnerships are integral to the festival experience and the broader BAYC brand strategy. Notable partners have included sportswear giant Adidas, media outlet Rolling Stone, Japanese streetwear brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE), and luxury automotive manufacturer BMW.13 Activations often involve the release of exclusive co-branded merchandise, the creation of immersive physical experiences (such as the BMW car projection in Hong Kong), and the integration of BAYC intellectual property into partner products and marketing campaigns.19

Community and Side Events

While Yuga Labs organizes the official festival, a large and integral part of the ApeFest experience is the extensive ecosystem of side events hosted by the community itself.4 These independently organized gatherings range from pool parties, poker tournaments, and paintball games to networking events and educational panels, often sponsored by other Web3 projects or prominent community members.4 For the 2025 Las Vegas event, Yuga Labs has formalized its support for this ecosystem by promoting an official community events calendar on the Luma platform, which lists dozens of events scheduled throughout the weekend.30 This demonstrates a strategic embrace of the community’s role in co-creating the broader festival atmosphere.

Cultural Impact and Reception

Brand Building and Community Cohesion

ApeFest is a cornerstone of Yuga Labs’ brand strategy, meticulously designed to cultivate a powerful sense of community, exclusivity, and brand loyalty.1 By producing “wildly ambitious” and “top-tier” immersive festivals, Yuga Labs reinforces the BAYC brand as a luxury “Web3 lifestyle company” that offers value far beyond a digital token.1 The event is a critical tool for bridging the virtual and physical realms, allowing members of a digital community to connect in person, network, and strengthen the social bonds that underpin the ecosystem’s value.2 The importance of these IRL events is reflected in Yuga Labs’ own investor materials, where gatherings like ApeFest are highlighted as key traction metrics demonstrating robust community engagement.47

The festival’s evolution also signals a deeper strategic ambition. Early iterations in 2021 and 2022 focused primarily on social and entertainment elements to solidify the community’s cultural foundation.15 The 2023 event in Hong Kong shifted focus to include major business development announcements, such as the Magic Eden marketplace partnership.26 The 2024 festival in Lisbon took this a step further with the launch of ApeChain, a fundamental piece of technical infrastructure.28 This progression, from social gathering to business conference to technology launchpad, suggests an intent to transition the BAYC ecosystem from a cultural club into a self-sustaining digital economy. With its exclusive membership (NFTs), governance (ApeCoin DAO), currency ($APE), and now its own infrastructure (ApeChain), ApeFest functions less like a party and more like an annual summit for a developing digital nation-state.

Criticism and Controversies

2023 Health and Safety Incident in Hong Kong

ApeFest 2023 in Hong Kong was marked by a significant health and safety incident that garnered widespread media attention. On the night of November 4, 2023, numerous attendees began reporting severe eye pain, vision problems, and skin burns following the main party.48 Many of those who sought emergency medical treatment were diagnosed with photokeratitis, a painful condition colloquially known as “welder’s eye” or “snow blindness,” which is caused by unprotected exposure to high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.49

Speculation quickly centered on the stage lighting, with many suggesting that improper UV lights, possibly germicidal UVC lamps, were used instead of safer UVA “blacklights”.49 The incident drew comparisons to a similar event at a Hypebeast party in Hong Kong in 2017, where the same type of lighting error occurred.50

Yuga Labs issued statements acknowledging the reports and launching an investigation.49 The company’s initial public relations response drew criticism for emphasizing that the number of affected individuals it was in direct contact with (15 people) represented “less than one percent” of the approximately 2,250 attendees. This was perceived by some community members and observers as an attempt to downplay the severity of the incident.48 On November 8, 2023, Yuga Labs provided an update confirming its investigation was focused on “fluorescent paint in one of our setup areas, and most definitely looking at UV light”.56 A subsequent official statement, following a comprehensive investigation with event producer Jack Morton Worldwide, concluded that “UVA emitted lights installed in one corner of the event was likely the cause” of the injuries. Yuga Labs expressed its distress over the incident and committed to supporting the recovery of those affected.62

Security and Logistical Challenges

Due to the high visibility of the events and the significant value of the digital assets held by attendees, ApeFest has faced unique security challenges. The 2022 event in New York City required a robust security plan to manage risks from “known BAYC antagonists” and a flash mob organized by a rival NFT project, which security successfully dispersed before it could cause a disruption.35

The festival has also faced logistical criticism from its community. At the 2023 Hong Kong event, attendees reported long queues for merchandise, with some waiting for hours only to find that their desired sizes or items were sold out, leading to frustration among those who had traveled internationally for the event.54
