The first companion collection, the Bored Ape Kennel Club (BAKC), was launched in June 2021.⁶²⁴ It consists of 10,000 unique NFT dogs, each designed to be a companion to a Bored Ape.⁵⁴ In a gesture of appreciation to its community, Yuga Labs offered every BAYC holder the chance to “adopt” one BAKC dog for free during a one-week claim period, with owners only needing to cover the transaction’s gas fee.^4535455 A 2.5% royalty fee was applied to all secondary market sales of BAKC NFTs for the first six weeks after launch, with the proceeds being donated to animal charities, including no-kill shelters.⁴¹⁵⁴⁵⁵

ApeCoin ($APE) and Decentralized Governance

In March 2022, the ecosystem took a significant step towards decentralization with the launch of ApeCoin ($APE).⁴¹¹³⁵ ApeCoin is an ERC-20 token designed to function as the primary utility and governance token for the entire APE ecosystem.⁵⁶⁵⁷ It has a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens.⁵⁷⁵⁸ The launch of a separate token and governing body can be seen as a strategic move to decentralize aspects of the ecosystem, potentially mitigating some regulatory risks for Yuga Labs by separating the currency from the core IP development.

A substantial portion of the ApeCoin supply (15%) was distributed via an airdrop to existing NFT holders. Owners of a Bored Ape could claim 10,094 APE, while Mutant Ape owners could claim 2,042 APE. Possessing a Bored Ape Kennel Club companion NFT entitled the holder to a larger claim, further rewarding the most engaged community members.⁴⁵⁹

ApeCoin serves as the governance token for the ApeCoin DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). All APE holders are members of the DAO and can vote on proposals concerning the ecosystem’s future, including fund allocations from the community treasury, strategic partnerships, and new projects.^460292225 The APE Foundation, a separate legal entity, acts as a steward for the DAO, tasked with administering its decisions and managing its day-to-day operations.⁵⁷⁵⁹²⁹ Beyond governance, ApeCoin is the official currency for transactions within the ecosystem, used for purchasing digital goods and services, accessing exclusive games, and as the medium of exchange in the Otherside metaverse.⁵⁶⁵⁸⁶¹

Entering the Metaverse: Otherside and Gaming

Yuga Labs signaled its ambition to move beyond PFP collections and into immersive digital experiences with the announcement of Otherside in March 2022.¹⁷ Developed in partnership with the blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands and the British metaverse technology firm Improbable, Otherside is a gamified, interoperable metaverse platform.⁴³⁰ The platform is envisioned as a vast virtual world where players can interact, build, and compete using their NFTs as playable avatars.⁴

The virtual land parcels within this metaverse are themselves NFTs, known as “Otherdeeds.” At launch, Otherdeeds were made available through a public sale and were also airdropped for free to all existing Bored Ape and Mutant Ape holders, once again rewarding the core community.⁴¹⁸

To further build out this interactive world, Yuga Labs has launched several gaming experiences. These include Dookey Dash, a skill-based “endless runner” game, and Legend of the Mara (LotM), a collection-based strategy game. Both are designed to integrate with the broader ecosystem, utilizing its NFTs and ApeCoin to create a cohesive and engaging user experience.¹¹¹⁸

Future Developments: The Launch of ApeChain

Technical Overview

In a landmark move to address the technical limitations of operating a large-scale metaverse on the Ethereum mainnet, Yuga Labs and the ApeCoin DAO announced the launch of ApeChain in October 2024.^62636465 This development marks a pivotal strategic shift for Yuga Labs, moving the company from being primarily a content and IP creator to also being an infrastructure provider for its own digital nation.

ApeChain is a dedicated blockchain designed to serve as the foundational infrastructure for the entire APE ecosystem. Technically, it is a Layer-3 network built using Arbitrum’s Orbit technology stack, which itself is a leading Layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum.⁶⁶¹⁵ This “L3” architecture is engineered to provide significantly higher transaction throughput, faster confirmation times, and dramatically lower fees compared to Ethereum, making it suitable for high-volume applications like gaming and social metaverses. The project was a collaborative effort, developed with key partners in the blockchain infrastructure space, including Arbitrum, Horizen Labs, and Caldera.⁶⁷

Strategic Implications and Utility

The launch of ApeChain is a direct response to the scalability challenges, often referred to as the “bull market problem” of high gas fees, that have plagued Ethereum and hindered the development of mainstream-friendly Web3 applications. The exorbitant transaction fees during the Otherside Otherdeeds mint served as a clear catalyst for Yuga Labs to seek a more controlled and cost-effective environment.¹⁵

A central and transformative feature of ApeChain is the adoption of ApeCoin ($APE) as its native gas token.⁶⁴⁶⁶⁶⁸ This decision fundamentally enhances the utility of APE, elevating it from a token used for governance and in-app purchases to the essential fuel required for every transaction on the network. This creates a constant source of demand for the token and deeply integrates it into the ecosystem’s core functions.

ApeChain is explicitly positioned as the foundation for Yuga Labs’ most ambitious projects, particularly the Otherside metaverse and its associated games. The high-performance, low-cost environment is designed to support the complex, real-time interactions of a massively multiplayer online world, an experience that would be economically and technically unfeasible on the Ethereum mainnet.⁶⁵¹⁵

Furthermore, ApeChain is being developed as a creator-centric platform. The launch included tools like ApeExpress, which simplifies the process for users to create and deploy their own tokens (such as memecoins) on the network.⁶⁶ This initiative signals a move towards an open ecosystem where community-led creation is encouraged, rather than a closed platform solely for Yuga’s own content. The development partnership with Wire Network also points to future ambitions of integrating decentralized artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to enhance creator tools and build novel user experiences.⁶²⁶⁷ By building its own blockchain, Yuga Labs gains control over its technical roadmap, economic model, and user experience, effectively vertically integrating its digital empire.
